Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 11/01/13
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: Classes continue to work on multiplication. Going slower with these skills has been helpful, and I am proud how they are using their math vocabulary when we discuss and write about math. I will be working with students who need extra practice on Monday, Nov. 4 during the first part of their recess. Any extra math fact practice or additional problems at home would be great.
Reading: “1-2-3, B.M.E…” That about “Sums” it up! We began working on writing summaries. We compared and contrasted the differences between retellings, book recommendations and summaries. We learned that summaries MUST include the ending. We discussed that the purpose of a summary was to inform, and not to tell all the small details from the book. A strong summary contains a main idea statement and the main parts from the beginning, middle and end.
We practiced writing main idea statements for books we have been reading in class, and also for our current chapter book (though that will change as we read further in the story).
Science: We continued learning about space and how planets move/revolve around the Sun. Planets are satellites of the Sun. We also discovered that Earth rotates on its axis and causes night and day. We will continue our exploration of night and day, and how Earth compares to other planets next week.
Social Studies: Would you like to be on the BEACH of an ISLAND right now? How about hiking to the top of a MOUNTAIN? These are a few of the landforms currently studied by our students. Landform project work was a big in-class focus this week. Lots of time went into the students’ research and preparing for their presentations. These are due Monday, Nov. 4. Thank you in advance for any extra support or “finishing touches” help.
Word Study: It is normal routine for us to have a pretest on Monday and words should come home that day. We have talked about picking appropriate words for our skill level…not too hard that it leads to so much frustration, but challenging enough so we are learning new patterns and vocabulary.
Parent activity will be assigned on Monday for homework (choose 1) and S.O.S. (choose 1) on Tuesday evening. Tests will be on Fridays. Thanks for any support with these skills.
